Gallery Season 2008-2009 Exhibition Calendar
England, 40" x 55", pastel
Paul Loehle
September 3-19, 2008
Exhibit description: Focus on the human form with contrasts of light and dark done in pastels.
Artist statement: I have always been fascinated with the human being. For better or worse the human being is unlike any other animal in the world in one particular way…it knows what it is and it wants to be more. My subjects are taken from the online networking site Myspace. Myspace seems to me to reflect the newest generation’s desire to establish Identity in a way that is quicker, easier, and more disposable than ever. My goal is to capture these fleeting moments of honesty disguised as dishonesty…in order to immortalize the most mortal of subjects.

Unselfish Destruction, 58" x 19" x 15" metal mixed media
Matthew Shelton & Danielle Tipler
October 16 - November 3, 2008
Join us for the artist's reception Friday, October 17, 2008, 6-9 p.m.
Exhibit description: Lightboxes by Matthew Shelton and pedestals and shadow boxes with metal forms and mixed media by Danielle Tipler.
Artist statement: I spent years studying classical art, and pursuing painting and drawing in all its forms. At the same time, I was drawn to forms of visual entertainment that are all but irresistible to the human eye: fireworks, optical illusions, blacklight posters, and Christmas light displays. The patterns themselves aim to place the viewer in a trance-like state, where they might find a moment of peace, and a renewed sense of connection with themselves and their surroundings. – Matthew Shelton
Artist statement: These sculptures are a soundtrack to my life, but without the sound. I have incorporated lyrical text to draw viewers in, make a statement, and identify with my story through song. Within my artwork, I’ve chosen songs that are deeply personal and somewhat controversial. Inspired by the changes in my life, I have experimented with how I can physically change metal. I have altered metal through many stages to finally construct a graphic image. –Danielle Tipler

Courtnee Bennett January 15-February 3, 2009
Exhibit description: Abstracts portraying terrains of the body, charcoal and pastels.
Artist statement: Every human action leaves an impression in some way, whether it be environmental, social, physical or emotional. My artwork focuses on the different impressions created throughout a person’s life. I draw connections between imprints on isolated regions of the body and impressions on the Earth created through human impact. By integrating my knowledge of human medicine and geology, my artwork portrays terrains of the body that can also be viewed as environmental landscapes.

Shall We Dance?, 24" x 18", oil on panel
Julie Mitchell
April 9 - 28, 2009
Exhibit description: Interactions among figures in domestic interiors. Exploring themes of psychological complexity, and loosely based upon images of dolls in dollhouses.
Artist statement: My current work deals with images that tell a story or more precisely, that capture one moment from a dramatic narrative. Conveying ambiguous relationships or unsettled psychological states, it depicts figures interacting in domestic interiors. I have always been drawn to films and books of suspense, many of which are set in seemingly safe homes that turn out to be anything but safe. In these stories, characters frequently exist in states of increasing tension that invariably culminate in some dramatic confrontation. In my paintings, I freeze-frame a moment before such an event.
Chelsea Pensioner Garden, 20" x 24", oil on canvas
The Arctic, 9" x 12", glassware/sandcarving
Monica Anne Achberger & Richard Delaney
May 1 - 23, 2009
Exhibit description: Impressionistic cityscapes and landscapes by Monica Anne Achberger & glassware and sand-carved art glass by Richard Delaney.
Artist statement: My paintings are places of beauty, serenity and reflection. I paint on location in the tradition of Impressionist masters style. For myself, there is an energy created, a dance between the environment, the brush and the paint on the canvas. Striving to create multiple purpose paintings, I expressly work to capture a moment in time, atmospheric qualities, light effects, a sense of mood, using intuitive brushwork, sensitive use of color and strong composition. –Monica Anne Achberger
Artist statement: Sandcarving is the art of cutting beyond the surface of glassware to expose a new level of dimension to a piece. It opens up a whole new layer of color and texture, allowing the art to become three dimensional. The glass is carved by using an abrasive sand-like substance, which roughens and erodes the surface it comes in contact with, which is a metaphor for life, really. Our experiences carve out who we are as a person, and I try to reflect that in my work. –Richard Delaney

Family Flower, 14" x 14", Painted wool, hand-embroidery
Penny McGinnis & Maggie Crabtree
July 2 - 22, 2009
Exhibit description: A mother-daughter family exhibit of photography and fabric art.
Artist statement: Creating with my hands brings joy to my day and calm to my heart. I love color! Like a blooming flower bed, my work reflects many shades of color. I grew up in a family of artists, each using different media. At five years old I picked up my first embroidery needle. The colorful floss hooked me. Later, I took up quilting and crocheting and eventually learned papermaking and bookmaking. I currently find pleasure in embroidering and beading on wool. As a self-taught artist, I enjoy the trial and error of combining fabrics and papers with thread, beads and other ephemeral. Most of all I love to bring color and beauty into my environment and share it with others. – Penny McGinnis
